An unmanned system is a machine or device that is equipped with necessary data processing units, sensors, automatic control, and communications systems and is capable of performing missions autonomously without human intervention. Unmanned systems have proven they can enhance situational awareness, reduce human workload, improve mission performance, and minimize overall risk to both civilian and military personnel, and all at a reduce cost.
Unmanned systems provide persistence, versatility, survivability, and reduced risk to human life, and in many cases are the preferred alternatives especially for missions that are characterized as dull, dirty, or dangerous. Unmanned systems include unmanned aircraft, ground robots, underwater explorers, satellites, and other unconventional structures.
Currently, the unmanned systems are fast replacing all the possible roles of manned systems both for civil and military applications.
