The IEI Chair, Interdisciplinary Research at National Design and Research Forum has been established with the objective of leveraging advances in interdisciplinary engineering practice to develop solutions and products for contemporary societal challenges. Both training and research components would be pursued under this Chair in the areas identified:

  • Biodesign: Focus on challenges in healthcare with the objective of developing affordable innovative solutions for unmet healthcare needs
  • Energy and Sustainability: Emphasis on establishing actionable networks between industry sectors investing in clean technology
  • Small Satellites Imaging, Sensing and Networked Systems: Develop solutions to visualize, interpret geospatial data to improve situational understanding of socio-economic challenges and present actionable intelligence to policy-makers

Outcomes Envisaged include:

  1. Registration of Design Patents contributing to growth of the NDRF Patent database
  2. IEI developing expertise to formulate and harmonize global technologies and standards with regional policy and regulatory practices
  3. Opportunity for IEI to understand, assimilate, and influence development of standards and implementation outcomes
  4. Develop NDRF’s Design Thinking course module that can be used to build capacity amongst the Consortium Members
  5. Establish partnerships to offer specialized modules in Systems Engineering
